How Code Wizards Group migrated Apex Legends to AWS Gamelift Servers (from re:Invent)
When AWS invited us to present at their re:Invent Las Vegas conference we were excited to experience the event firsthand. We loved the opportunity to help Respawn Entertainment move their game to AWS so we relished the chance to tell more people how it was done and help them migrate their game too.
The fact that the game was migrated in 10 days has been mentioned a lot so we wanted to deep dive into how this was achieved and why “better together” is always our working practise with EA, AWS and Code Wizards Group.
Presenting:
- Tom Penrose, Chief Online Services Officer, Code Wizards Group
- Trevor Moore, Principal Account Manager AWS
- Jared Cugno, Head of Technology, Respawn Entertainment (EA)
So what’s to see and hear about?
Tom, Jared, and Trevor take us through the strategic migration of EA’s Apex Legends from its previous hosting solution to Amazon GameLift Servers. They’ll explore why this is more than a mere migration; but was a comprehensive transformation driven by motivations to enhance the player experience, modernise hosting, and maintain developer velocity.
You’ll also hear how a key focus was improving latency and reducing lag and why moving off bare metal gave better access to modern hardware and observability tools.
There’s lots of detail on the unique challenges of operating multiplayer games at scale, across massive daily and seasonal swings in player capacity that require elastic, high availability infrastructure. And why that makes GameLift both awesome, super flexible and offers global coverage + scalable performance.
