Esports Gaming League.
Founded in 2011, EGL has been at the heart of esports, watching it evolve from front-row seats. Like Code Wizards, they are passionate gamers and care deeply about driving the industry forwards. Over the years, EGL has actively contributed to the development of top-tier esports titles, orchestrated prestigious World Championships, and produced content that has captivated millions. Why are we telling you this? Because for several of their biggest projects, Code Wizards has been working behind the scenes to help them deliver success.
“Working with Code Wizards has been the opposite of our previous experience of working with developers.
They understand esports and high performance scalability so we were able to continue with our day jobs while the handled the technical aspects for us. It was easy and fun; two things I’ve never been able to say before!”
– Glen Elliott, CEO, EGL
Trials of Ashika
To announce the launch of the new Warzone map, Ashika Island, EGL devised a tournament format which would see some of the biggest creators in Europe and the Middle East compete for $50,000 and show off the new map.
The three day event saw over a million hours watched. All 32 players broadcasted their POV to their audience on their own channels, allowing the creators the space to pour their own personality into the tournament. How did we help? Two of our most senior wizards – including CTO, Martin Thomas – built the tournament hub companion site, allowing fans to keep up to date and jump in at any moment.
Gears of War esports
EGL has a proud history with Gears of War, dating back to 2010, and was asked by Microsoft and The Coalition to kickstart the Gears esports community in Europe.
EGL planned a full series of events, broadcasting on Twitch, YouTube, and Mixer, with VOD highlights packages available after each round. The challenge that EGL faced was that they loved their existing tournament platform, but it couldn’t scale to the demands of these events.
Enter the Wizards.
Our challenge was to build an esports tournament platform that adhered to EGL’s strict parameters and met the needs of the EGL Gears Open. It had to look, feel, and function the same as well as be capable of coping with the number of players involved in the competition. On top of that, we had to migrate the existing player database.
Success looked like building a like-for-like tournament platform that could scale to the requirements of the competition, a complete migration of existing data, and with zero disruption to the playerbase. The is precisely what Code Wizards delivered. If you had asked the players, they’d never have even known that they were on a new platform.
Real Cricket
A common headache for developers in esports is bridging the gap from creating a game, to building a community, then having a thriving playerbase. The huge upside to getting this right is increases in playtime, average spend, and content creation.
In partnership with EGL, Real Cricket wanted to create a competitive environment with a cash prize for the winner. The challenge for Code Wizards? Create a tournament structure and platform that was robust and scalable to accommodate the 1,000,000 average daily users of Real Cricket.
We built a Swiss league style ladder system, featuring an ELO-based scoring system, that allowed for promotion and relegation between leagues. After two weeks of multiple rounds, players from the top league battled it out for the grand prize in the final knockout tournament. Such a large number of players and matches in only two weeks meant that matchmaking and scoring propriety were paramount.
We wrote a completely new and separate API, specifically built for mobile esports. Scale and performance were obvious challenges, but with a lot of work centering around leveraging cache for each league table, we improved performance across the board. Howzat?
NARAKA: Bladepoint
Over the past few years, EGL has extended its unwavering support to NetEase Games in the global expansion of NARAKA: Bladepoint as a premier battle royale esport.
Orchestrating and managing furiously competitive NARAKA tournaments across North America and Europe, EGL provided a global audience with access to gameplay from top-tier players from these regions via live broadcast, social media, and community engagement.
All of this was made possible via our integrated tournament platform. Leave it to the Wizards.
